I'VE PUT TOO MUCH GLUE ON THE WALL. HOW DO I FIX IT?

Applying glue properly is as important as cutting the wallpaper to the right size or ensuring that it adheres perfectly to the surface. That’s why it’s important to apply the exact amount. The problem arises when too much glue is spread on the wall, as it’s easy for small bumps to appear or for it to overflow at the seams.

"Sometimes it is inevitable, especially when the first strips of wallpaper are placed. It must be taken into account that the surface to be wallpapered will always absorb part of the adhesive. But until the first strips are placed, it will not be known to what extent. The logical tendency is to apply too much glue on the wall that will then, one way or another, have to be removed."

How to act if there is too much glue on the wall?

The basic advice is to observe the behavior of the surface as it is being glued and to do it in not very large amounts. That will be the best way to avoid applying too much glue on the wall. If we see that the substrate needs more, we simply need to add. And, if there is an excess, it can be spread over the surface with the brush.

"It should not be forgotten that the drying time is long. Therefore, if that excess glue is spread even to the space occupied by other strips, nothing should happen. We will soon realize how much the surface tolerates and we can adjust what is necessary to avoid having too much glue on the wall."

If there is really a lot left over and we see that there is too much glue on the wall even to spread it, we can always collect the excess with the same glue brush or by passing a small spatula over the surface. It is advisable, however, to do it carefully to avoid damaging the surface.

"And what if the excess spills over while smoothing and reaches areas where wallpaper is not intended to be placed? In that case, what we should do is immediately remove that glue from the wall by passing a cloth slightly dampened with warm water. It will easily drag away the excess adhesive."

Another problem is that we realize there is too much glue on the wall when we have already placed the strip of paper. Removing it will not always be the best option. To avoid air bubbles, the surface must be smoothed with a brush, a spatula, or a cloth.

"You can always influence this part so that, in addition to the air bubbles, the excess glue comes out from the edges if too much glue has really been applied to the wall. However, it is advisable to remove it as soon as it appears on the surface with a cloth or a sponge."

The importance of good gluing technique

"We point out that it is important to observe when the glue tolerates the surface. It is the best way to avoid applying glue on the wall. But other factors must be taken into account. One of them is the preparation of the product. If there are lumps, there will be areas where it will spread perfectly and others where there will be excess that will then need to be removed."

Another important factor is the brush used for gluing. Not just any brush will do. It must always be a specific brush for this purpose. They are slightly thicker than conventional ones and allow for better spreading of the product, thus avoiding areas where there is an excess of glue on the wall.

Do not soak the bristles along their entire length and make sure to spread the product very well are also tips to keep in mind to avoid excess glue on the wall that could ruin the finish. By following these recommendations, there will be no problem.
